2011-10-03 11:44:34 - Making the case to promote the San Juan Bay Estuary as a priority zone:  In a public hearing conducted at the facilities of the Environmental Quality Board on September 21, 2011, at 9:30 am, Javier Laureano discussed the importance of our ecosystem and its links to public health and the economy of the island.  The Program is presenting an SRF proposal to study the specific sites in the watershed where sewage water discharges are occurring.  The study will work as a blueprint for identifying the infrastructure needed to improve the water quality of the Metropolitan Area of Puerto Rico.

2011-10-03 11:42:38 - The Program has been working on the agreements needed to begin the bidding process, in October, 2011, for dredging a small segment of this small island that is currently attached to the Cantera Peninsula by sediments and debris.  The activity will improve water quality and circulation in this axis of the San José Lagoon.  On September 20, 2011, Javier Laureano met with Joshua Galarza, Esq., Director of DNER’s Legal Office, in order to discuss the main contributions to the project from the DNER.  All requests from the SJBEP were met.

2011-10-03 11:41:40 - Eng. Fernando Pagés from TetraTech presented the major findings regarding the Condado Lagoon benthic and seagrasses restoration project.  Several implementation and restoration ideas were discussed by the STAC.  As a part of the meeting, we welcomed Mr. José Rivera, from NOAA, as a new STAC member.

2011-10-03 11:41:05 - On September 23, 2011, the SJBEP's Scientific Advisor, Dr. Jorge Bauzá,  met with Dr. Méndez and identified Las Curías, on the upper side of the SJBE’s watershed, as the best place to operate the weather station.  The meteorological data collected by this instrument will be crucial for the analysis, interpretation, and modeling of water quality data.

2011-10-03 11:39:44 - On September 28, 2011, the outreach coordinator, Gladys Rivera, the scientific advisor, Dr. Jorge Bauzá, and high school students from Colegio San Ignacio removed old pvc tubes from the Condado Lagoon’s Red Mangrove restoration site.  One-hundred-thirteen empty, worn, pvc tubes used for the implementation of the Reily Encapsulated mangrove planting technique were removed from the site.  However, approximately 350 red mangroves trees, from 3 to 4 feet tall, are still growing well as part of this planting effort.

2011-10-03 11:38:21 - The report entitled Estuarine Environmental Indicators for the San Juan Bay Estuary: Assessment of Sediments and Fish Tissue Contaminants was submitted by Dr. Ernesto Otero, from the UPR Mayagüez campus, on September 29.  This report contains the results and conclusions of the fish tissue and sediment contaminants study performed at 18 stations in the San Juan Bay Estuary.

2011-10-03 11:37:40 - On September 9, thirty students from the Hossana Academy in Carolina experienced for the first time a school field trip focused on the environment and science.  Our Outreach Coordinator, Gladys Rivera, offered the group an educational talk and a guided tour through the Black Mangrove forest of the Piñones Nature Reserve.  Water quality monitoring was performed as well.

2011-10-03 11:36:57 - SJBE joined the Scuba Dogs Society’s efforts during this event.  Fifty SJBE volunteers participated in the cleanup activities on September 17, 2011, at Bayview in Cataño.  Students, 4H members, parents, and a community leader from the area joined Gladys Rivera to collect more than 1,000 pounds of sub-aquatic debris.   We thank 4H Club of Cataño leader Patricia Rosa; Congregación Mita teacher Dana Pérez, and Bay View community leader Don Vicente for their collaboration.
Other communities of the SJBE participated in the cleanup, including Parque la Esperanza in Cataño, two sites on the Río Piedras river, the Chiclana creek, Ocean Park, the Condado Lagoon, the Escambrón beach, Isla Verde, and several other areas in the Piñones community.

2011-10-03 11:33:26 - Community groups organized by G-8, Inc., and the Enlace Corporation invited representatives from EPA, SJBEP, Environmental Quality Board, San Juan Municipality, PRASA, NR&ED, and PR Community office to join efforts to clean sewers in the communities affected by flooding.  A field technical visit held September 16 and a meeting September 23 were sufficient to make a plan and begin the field work.

The week of September 26, the San Juan Municipality and PRASA began the cleanup activities that will continue until all identified areas are covered. Gladys Rivera and Jorge Bauzá represented the SJBEP and offered support in the Outreach and Scientific areas.  Congratulations to community leaders of G8, Inc., and Enlace Corporation for this initiative.

2011-10-03 11:32:39 - We welcome Adolfina Irizarry de Puig School in Toa Baja and the Central High School of Visual Arts School in San Juan as our new Estuary Guardian members.  Toa Baja’s school will be monitoring the West side of the San Juan Bay, and Central High will monitor the East side.  We thank the collaboration of the Department of Education Regional Science Coordinator, Ruth Rosa, in adopting this project for the Toa Baja’s school, and the science teachers who will be working with the Guardians in both schools.

2011-10-03 11:32:12 - The September 24, 2011, screening of the blockbuster “Australia” was a hit in our Estuary’s Cinema project in the Condado Lagoon Park.  More than 300 people attended the show, where we also presented educational material about the SJBE.

2011-10-03 11:31:15 - Thanks to the activities of current Work Plan, the SJBEP was able to support the Central High’s Vegetable Garden with the purchasing of planting tools for the students, wood, seeds, and other materials needed for their garden.  Teacher Vicenty is the leader of the initiative in the school, where already 100 students are working with great enthusiasm.  The School is now part of our Estuary Guardians.

2011-08-19 15:54:14 - A berm “is a man-made mound of earth.” The organization will contract several persons from the Capetillo community to construct berms that will redirect the flow of two small creeks in order to improve water quality.  Javier Laureano met with representatives from Capetillo on August 12, 2011, to discuss the activity.  The project will be finished by September 30, 2011.

2011-08-19 15:53:43 - As part of the SJBEP,s ongoing Estuarine Oral History Project, Javier Laureano interviewed Mrs. Eloísa Salvá, who is a descendant of the original owners of several pieces of land in the Miramar neighborhood.  One of the streets of the community was named in her family's honor.  Mrs. Salvá has a vivid memory of the tides of the Condado Lagoon and all the living organisms of the body of water, including its seagrass beds.  The interview took place on August 2, 2011, at 2:00 pm in Mrs. Salvá's home. We want to thank her and her family for the opportunity.

2011-08-19 15:52:55 - The SJBEP attended the press conference on August 11, 2011 to announce the new cycle of Agenda Ciudadana.  This is an interdisciplinary initiative through which civil society, the private sector, and the government discuss current issues together and present ideas and proposals for solving problems in areas such as Health, Education, and the Environment.  The initiative, coordinated by the nonprofit educational organization CAPEDCOM, is hosted by El Nuevo Día newspaper.  Our organization has been participating in the Agenda Ciudadana meetings for the last year.

2011-08-19 15:52:32 - Last week the PR Environmental Quality Board requested the water quality data collected by the SJBE Water Quality Volunteer Monitoring Program as part of their 303 (d)/305 (b) Integrated Report.  The document consists of a water quality inventory and a list of impaired waters.  All states and regional jurisdictions of the United States must comply with this requirement.  This valuable information is used by EPA to inform Congress about the progress made at the national level toward the achievement of the statutory water quality goals established by the Federal Clean Water Act.

2011-08-19 15:52:08 - The Scuba Dog Society leads the local efforts of the International Coastal Clean Up.  Puerto Rico is one of the leading participants in the event thanks to the participation of over 14,000 volunteers.  Furthermore, the Society organized an underwater cleanup of aquatic debris.  The SJBEP has been a partner and sponsor of the Scuba Society since its foundation.  Dr. Bauzá was officially presented as a new member during the Board of Directors ordinary meeting held on July 21, 2011.

2011-08-01 16:26:45 - On July 29th, 2011, our Water Quality Program Coordinator, Ernesto Olivares, reported raw sewage overflow on the northern fringe of the Condado Lagoon. People from the community contacted local authorities due to the strong presence of raw sewage odors.

2011-08-01 16:26:07 - On July 23rd, 2011, the Student Chapter of the Marine Environment Society (CESAM, for its Spanish acronym) carried out a coastal cleanup in Ocean Park Beach. They targeted cigarette butts buried in the sand and were able to pick up 16,000 of them. A total of 104 volunteer took part in the cleanup.

2011-07-19 10:24:59 - The organization submitted to the United States Corps of Engineers (USACE) its official comments regarding the public notice for permit application for the reconfiguration of the existing eastern pier section and the extension of the western “T” pier section.  We recommended that the 0.19 acres of seagrass bed that will be directly impacted be salvaged and transplanted to an adequate alternate site.  Also, the remaining 1.06 acres of seagrass beds in the area should be protected from possible impacts associated with this activity.

2011-07-19 10:23:59 - The Scientific Advisor offered a conference on the hydrological connection between the ground waters of the karst and the San Juan Bay Estuary on July 13, 2011. The activity was organized by the Outreach Coordinator and included a technical trip to this beautiful forest within the city.  Approximately 20 volunteers participated in the activity.

2011-07-19 10:23:20 - The SJBEP submitted to the San Juan Municipality a proposal to establish a network of stormwater monitoring stations along the Condado, Miramar, and Santurce.  The proposal includes the installation of state-of-the-art equipment in the stormwater drainage system to filter oil and grease as well as other pollutants.

2011-07-19 10:22:31 - On July 9, 2011, at 7:00pm. the organization presented another successful screening of its open air cinema project at the Condado Lagoon.  On this occasion we screened several short film documentaries about mangroves as well as “The Simpsons: The Movie.”

2011-07-01 15:02:36 - The Government of Puerto Rico will celebrate the 4th of July in the fringes of the Condado Lagoon with several events, including concerts and the selling of fritters and local food in kiosks that will be located on the southern axis of this estuarine body of water.
Javier Laureano contacted our partners in the Office of the Governor to promote an oil recycling campaign and received their immediate response.  As a result, the Solid Waste Management Authority will establish 30 oil-recycling centers as part of the event.  The collected oil will be recycled as part of an initiative in the Jayuya Municipality where used oil is transformed into biodiesel fuel for the agriculture industries of the island.
The Office of the Governor also authorized the SJBEP to design and place educational signs to protect the red mangrove (Rizophora mangle) planting sites of the organization located on the northern and eastern axis of the Condado Lagoon.

2011-07-01 14:59:53 - The SJBEP endorsed on June 24, 2011 the designation of the Isla Verde Coral Reef Island as a marine sanctuary.  This is an initiative proposed by the Isla Verde community. To date their nonprofit grassroots organization -Arrecifes Pro Ciudad- has gathered thousands of signs in a petition letter to government representatives asking for this protective designation.  The coral reefs of the Isla Verde Island are at risk due to Jet Ski and vessel impacts, as well as sedimentation and nonpoint source pollution.  On June 26, 2011 the organization also endorsed the “Condado beach nourishment and artificial reefs infrastructure”.  This is an initiative driven by community and business leaders of the area concerned by the serious erosion problem of this estuarine sandy beach.

2011-06-21 14:59:54 - On June 11 and 12, 2011, the Kayak Federation organized a successful event at which hundreds of participants enjoyed free kayak and canoe rides in the Jaime Benítez Condado Lagoon Park.  Gladys Rivera offered talks and distributed educational flyers about the SJBE ecosystems.

2011-06-21 14:59:31 - The winning team from the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) (www.nosb.org) will be visiting our estuary on July 19, 2011, as part of their prize, which includes a one-week educational visit to Puerto Rico.  We will report more information as the event approaches.

2011-06-21 14:59:06 - As part of their school environmental program, students from the San Ignacio School will continue their red mangrove monitoring activities at our Condado Lagoon restoration site.  Students have performed an assessment of the planting and identified the need to plant 100 additional seedlings.  The volunteers began removing PVC tubes.  The activity took place at the San Gerónimo planting site on June 9, 2011.

2011-06-21 14:58:45 - The STAC met at the library of the Environmental Offices Building on May 26, 2011.  Key activities for next work plan were discussed. The next STAC meeting was scheduled for Thursday, August 18, 2011.  The STAC welcomes Katia Avilés from the Enlace Project as a new member. 2011-06-21 14:58:17 - Sampling of Bottom Sediments:
Sediment samples were collected from the nine stations located within the "eastern half" of the SJ Bay Estuary (i.e., Stations 1SJB, 2SJB, 3SJB, 16SJB, 5PC, 6MP, 4RPN, 15LC, and 18LC).
Sediment samples and one equipment blank were FedExed to Pace Analytical Laboratories in New Orleans, to comply with sample holding times.

Sampling of Fish and Crab Tissues:
Fishing (traps and nets) for Mojarra and blue crab (targeted species) was conducted for three days (June 8-10) at the five biota sampling stations located within the eastern half of the SJ Bay Estuary.
Biota Sampling Station 6 MP (Martin Peña) had to be moved westward, as bottom anoxic conditions prevented the capture of any organisms.  The anoxic conditions were evidenced by the reduction of iron oxide on the cages.

Regarding fish:  
Fish were captured at four of the five stations (all but the 5PC Sampling Station).
Mojarras were only present at two sampling stations (although of different species and sizes), whereas other edible fish species (snappers) were captured at the remaining two stations.

Regarding blue crab:
Crabs were captured at all but the Martin Peña Sampling Station.
The minimum tissue weight required to perform all chemical analyses was not collected at the Sampling Stations.

2011-06-21 14:56:07 - Yadiris López Rivera, a doctorate candidate from the Department of Environmental Health at the University of Puerto Rico, will begin a required graduate internship under the supervision of Dr. Jorge Bauzá.  López will complete an epidemiological study about water-born diseases in the communities surrounding the Martin Peña Channel.  She met with Dr. Bauzá on May 27, 2011, to discuss the objectives, approaches, and methodology of the study.

2011-06-21 14:55:19 - On June 6, 2011, Dr. Jorge Bauzá submitted an abstract for the Second Sea Escape Symposium organized by the PR Department of Natural and Environmental Resources. The title of the presentation is: “Enhancing and Monitoring the San Juan Bay Estuary: Lessons Learned in an Urban Estuary.” Also on June 6, Dr. Bauzá offered a presentation about the San Juan Bay Estuary Program to the PR Natural History Society, the oldest environmental organization in Puerto Rico.

2011-06-21 14:54:51 - Dr. Jorge Bauzá will mentor graduate student Mr. Ariel Lopez from the University Of Puerto Rico.  Mr. Lopez will analyze benthic images of the SJBE submerged coastline.  The objective is to characterize critical resources, such as coral reefs, that depend on what is exported from the SJBE system.  The UW images were obtained through collaboration between the SJBE Program and USEPA OSV Bold.  Ariel Lopez and Dr. Bauzá last met on June 8, 2011.

2011-06-05 22:29:34 - Contractor Ernesto Olivares has been working on a study to better understand of our fishermen, their experiences, and their concerns as some of the main users of the ecosystem.  To date he has been doing research at the following fishing villas and fishermen cooperatives:  Puerta de Tierra, Cataño, Puntilla, Punta Andín, Vietnam, Piñones Fishermen Cooperative, and the San Juan Fishing Center.  The study also includes informal fishing sites, and to date research has been conducted at Puente Dos Hermanos (San Antonio Canal), and under the bridges of the Baldorioty Avenue (Suarez Canal) and PR-187, located at Boca de Cangrejos (Torrecillas Lagoon).

2011-05-16 11:45:11 - We are very glad to announce that the event was a complete success, with over 2,000 volunteers at more than a hundred monitoring stations all over the island.  This is the third year the activity has been organized by the San Juan Bay Estuary Program and sponsored by the Environmental Quality Board, EPA, Puerto Rico Water and Environment Association, Crowley Maritime Corporation, Caribbean University, CH Caribe, and the Jobos Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.

The San Juan Bay Estuary Program receives all the collected data and reports it to the World Water Monitoring Day, contributing to a global mapping of the condition of the planet's water.  Through the events, citizens are rediscovering the creeks, rivers, lagoons, and bays of the island, which constitutes the first step towards their restoration and conservation.

2011-05-16 11:42:38 - Jorge Bauzá and our contractor Fernando Pagés Range discussed with the USACE the proposal of using the dredged sediments from the maintenance of the San Juan harbor and navigational channels to fill the Condado Lagoon depressions.  The Corps set 2016 as the year to perform the restoration project in the Condado Lagoon.  Also, the team discussed (a) the possibility of using sediments from La Peninsula Esperanza as capping material; (b) the San Juan Harbor dredging schedule; (c) the San Juan Harbor Mitigation Project status and alternatives; (d) the San Juan Bay Estuary Program/Condado Lagoon Restoration Project; (e) available Documentation/Studies; (f) required Documentation/Authorizations; (g) funding; and (h) future efforts.  The meeting took place through a conference call on April 27, 2011, at 10:00am.

2011-05-16 11:38:06 - From a student population with very high drop-out rates, this year we have several students who have been accepted at universities and will follow careers in Science.  The younger ones are using Estuary Guardians for their science fair projects, and one of our students won regional awards and traveled to Vermont to present her research in April, 2011.  She received a full-page interview in a local newspaper.

The closing activity took place at the Jaime Benítez Park thanks to the sponsorship of EPA and Crowley Maritime Corporation. 2011-04-29 22:37:23 - Community leaders from Caimito met with Javier Laureano to express their concern regarding a considerable amount of sediment and debris being dumped literally near their backyards. A large amount of this sediment reaches the Chiclana Creek and is then deployed into the San Juan Bay. The US Corps of Engineers invests over 10 million dollars every 3-5 years in dredging this kind of sediment from the navigational channels of the Bay. The contractor responsible for this action has been issued a court order to stop the sediment dumping. However, according to our community representatives, the activity persists.

2011-04-29 22:33:53 - Our last comic book workshop on stormwater pollution took place on Saturday, April 16, 2011, at the Museum of Contemporary Art. As part of this closing workshop, Javier Laureano and Gladys Rivera participated in a very interesting group session conducted by José Luis Vargas with the students, during which they discussed potential topics for future comic book projects in their communities. One of the main concerns of the students is school bullying, and some bullying victims shared their experiences in a very emotional moment with the group.

On Saturday, March 26, 2011, the students took a guided boat tour with Gladys Rivera and Ernesto Olivares to take photos and experience the ecosystem in order to begin developing a draft plot for the comic. Last Saturday, April 2, 2011, participants began the workshop in the beautiful facilities of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico. A total of 13 students (6 and 7 from each level) are taking the workshop, and most of them are active members of the Estuary Guardians School Water Monitoring Project. The facilitator and guide of the creative process is graphic artist José Luis Vargas.

2010-10-01 17:54:21 - El 28 de septiembre de 2010 personal del Programa del Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan junto a un grupo de científicos, y especialistas en temas ambientales y estuarinos provenientes de la academia y el sector privado presentaron el "Segundo Informe de la Condición Ambiental del Estuario" en una conferencia celebrada en el Hotel Caribe Hilton.

Este informe presenta las condiciones del Estuario al día de hoy en términos de calidad de agua, metales en los sedimentos, tóxicos en peces y crustáceos.   Además, resume los resultados de los estudios más recientes realizados en el Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan como el estudio de la Iguana iguana, la caracterización de los tipos de fondos estuarinos y los censos navideños de aves.   Es importante destacar que el informe resalta las actividades de restauración en humedales y hábitat marinos.

Al comienzo de la misma, Javier Laureano, Director del Programa del Estuario y el Sr. Carl Sodelberg, Director de la División del Caribe de la EPA, se dirigieron a los participantes mencionando la importancia de la zona del estuario y su conservación.  Durante la actividad, los participantes tuvieron la oportunidad de hacer preguntas a los conferenciantes y compartir impresiones con ellos luego de terminada la misma. Agradecemos a los conferenciantes y participantes por tan exitosa actividad.

2010-07-20 17:05:40 - El sábado 17 de julio sobre 50 voluntarios se dieron cita en el Balneario del Escambrón para colaborarar con la limpieza de playa y áreas verdes coordinada por el Estuario y el Caribe Hilton.  Se recogieron sobre 600 libras de basura y de esta basura se contabilizaron sobre 3,000 colillas de cigarrillos.

Parques Nacionales de Puerto Rico presentaron la película "Avatar" el
sábado 10 de julio a las 7:00 de la noche  en el  Parque Jaime Benítez de la Laguna del Condado.

Cientos de personas se dieron cita en el Parque y disfrutaron de esta presentación tan esperada.

Esta película es ambientada en el año 2154 y los acontecimientos que narra se
desarrollan en Pandora, una luna del planeta Polifemo habitada por una raza
humanoide llamada na'vi, con la que los humanos se encuentran en conflicto
debido a que uno de sus clanes se encuentra asentado alrededor de un gigantesco  árbol que cubre una inmensa veta de un mineral muy cotizado y que supondría la solución a los problemas energéticos de la Tierra: el unobtainium.

Jake Sully, un marine que quedó parapléjico, es seleccionado para participar en
el programa Avatar, un proyecto que transporta la mente de los científicos a
unos cuerpos artificiales de na'vi para que así la comunicación con los nativos
resulte más sencilla.

Avatar fue nominada al Premio Oscar 2010 en la categoría de mejor película. Este
filme está clasificado PG-13.

En Cine Verde también  se proyecta  material educativo del Estuario,
documentales sobre los mangles, los arrecifes de coral y servicios públicos de
las diferentes campañas educativas que realiza el Estuario y  la Compañía de
Parques Nacionales.

Voluntarios del Programa del Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan sembraron 50 mangles rojos y árboles de uvas playeras en el islote La Esperanza como parte del programa de restauración de la especie en la Bahía de San Juan y cuerpos de agua adyacentes.

El mangle rojo, que en un tiempo fue asociado con el mal olor, los mosquitos y enfermedades, hoy está probado que es parte importante para proteger los arrecifes de coral y la fauna que vive en ellos.

“Este proyecto forma parte de los planes de restauración de la bahía de San Juan, los bordes de los cuerpos de agua de la bahía y de la bahía del Condado. El mangle rojo está vinculado a la salud de los arrecifes de coral porque sus raíces retienen los sedimentos y contaminantes. Además permiten que llegue luz solar y que esté suficientemente saludable el agua para que puedan vivir los arrecifes”, explicó Javier Laureano, director ejecutivo del Programa del Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan.

“Antes se pensaba que el mangle rojo causaba malos olores, mosquitos e incluso se asoció a enfermedades, y por eso casi se elimina. Hoy día un tercio del mangle rojo está en el estuario”, agregó Laureano mientras comentaba que el programa se ha dado a la tarea de reforestar los puntos críticos de la bahía de San Juan y la bahía del Condado por los pasados seis años.

El proyecto, que ha contado con la colaboración de unos 2,000 mil voluntarios, ha logrado plantar 3,000 mil ejemplares de mangle rojo.

El islote La Esperanza es artificial, creado por el producto del dragado de los canales de navegación de la bahía de San Juan. Se utiliza como “isla barrera” para proteger la costa de la erosión. Este islote sirve de anidaje y hábitat a decenas de especies, como el pelícano pardo, gaviotas, cangrejos violinistas, almejas y distintos tipos de árboles y arbustos, como emajaguillas y mangles. La siembra de mangle rojo ayuda a estabilizar y mejorar el hábitat de las especies que visitan este islote.

“Ahora mismo, el islote La Esperanza protege la costa de la erosión. Si el patrón de erosión continúa como hasta ahora, la costa de Cataño, donde está Bay View y Bacardí, podría estar en peligro. El mangle rojo ayuda a que la costa esté protegida”, agregó Laureano sobre el islote al que no se promueven visitas masivas.

El pez león pudo haber llegado a las costas de Puerto Rico en el agua de lastre que almacenan y descargan los barcos.

Al ya famoso pez león le acompañan el coral de copa anaranjado, la medusa australiana moteada y dos especies de la almeja americana, todos visitantes que llegaron y se quedaron en las costas de Puerto Rico.
Exóticas o invasoras, pues son visitantes inesperados que provienen de mares distantes; en verdad indeseados, pues, por más vistosos y hermosos, una vez se establecen pueden impactar las criaturas marinas nativas y alterar la actitud de los bañistas hacia el mar y sus criaturas. Este es el caso del conocido y poco entendido pez león.
Unos dicen que el pez león fue liberado intencionalmente al mar por aficionados a los acuarios de peces tropicales, después de adquirirlos a través de los centros de mascotas y distribuidores de peces tropicales.
Precisamente de un acuario destruido en la Florida por el huracán Andrew en el 1992 se cree que se liberaron accidentalmente algunos ejemplares. Según este escenario, estos ejemplares y sus descendientes conquistaron y poblaron el mar Caribe y la costa este de los Estados Unidos.
Conquistar la costa este de los Estados Unidos es plausible, pues ayudados por la Corriente del Golfo que, como góndola, recorre las costas desde la Florida hacia el Atlántico Norte, estos peces lograron asentarse a lo largo y ancho de este litoral.
Pero que estos mismos ejemplares y sus descendientes conquisten las costas del Caribe y Puerto Rico necesita revisión. También se trata de corrientes oceánicas, razón por la cual veo un poco complicado, por no decir poco probable, que un pez león adulto, pequeño en etapa larval o un huevito fecundado pueda viajar miles de kilómetros desde la Florida hasta Puerto Rico.
En este caso irían en contra de fuertes corrientes oceánicas como la Corriente de la Florida y la Corriente de las Antillas, aunque tengamos presente que la naturaleza nos puede brindar grandes sorpresas.
Lo que no es sorpresa es la llegada de estos peces ayudados por el hombre o, en este caso, por sus máquinas flotantes. Sobre 45,000 embarcaciones cruzan anualmente los mares de un puerto a otro para embarcar y desembarcar mercancía, pasajeros y agua de lastre. El agua de lastre es un volumen de agua que los grandes barcos almacenan para la estabilidad de la embarcación en alta mar.
Los capitanes pueden recoger aguas de un océano, navegar miles de kilómetros y descargar inocentemente la misma en otras costas. Pero el agua de lastre, además de agua, contiene vida acuática y peces.
Estudios realizados por colegas de la Universidad de Washington y colaboradores demuestran que hasta 31 especies de peces han sido identificadas en el agua de lastre. Esto incluyendo peces de la misma familia del pez león (Scorpaeniade).
Por otro lado, el Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente publicó en el 2006 un informe que revela que al menos 118 de especies marinas exóticas pudieron ser introducidas por medio del agua de lastre a la Región del Gran Caribe Ampliado, que incluye las islas del Caribe, el Golfo de México y las costas de América Latina. De este inventario, los peces constituyeron el grupo dominante (39 especies). El pez león pudo haber sido uno de estos.
No cabe duda de que el agua de lastre es una fuente de especies marinas exóticas, particularmente en aquellos puertos con alto tráfico marítimo como es el Puerto de la Bahía de San Juan, que recibe de otros mares aproximadamente 580 embarcaciones de carga y más de 300 cruceros de pasajeros al año.
Por tal razón, es imperante establecer un programa de detección temprana y monitoreo de estas especies en el agua de lastre de los barcos que nos visitan. La realidad es que una vez estas especies se establecen en nuestras costas se requiere de un gran esfuerzo y cooperación para controlarlas y, muy difícilmente, erradicarlas en su totalidad.

La Universidad Interamericana presentó hoy su más reciente proyecto: el primer centro de Conservación de Manatíes de Puerto Rico. El Centro, que ubicará en el Recinto de Bayamón, estará a cargo del doctor Antonio Mignucci.
Según se informó, la primera fase del proyecto, que consistirá de una serie de tanques para albergar a seis manatíes adultos y cuatro cachorros, estará lista para agosto.
La segunda fase, un edificio de investigación, deberá estar listo para el verano del 2011.
El presidente de la Interamericana, Manuel Fernós, anunció una aportación de $100,000 de la Interamericana. El costo total del proyecto es de $1 millón. Los que quieran hacer donativos monetarios, pueden llamar al 279-1912, del Recinto de Bayamón y pedir la Oficina de Rectoría.

A partir del 10 de junio, uno de los tinglares adultos que lleguen a las playas de Puerto Rico a depositar sus huevos será “reclutado” por los vigilantes del Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales (DRNA) para participar de un nuevo estudio en el cual se seguirá su trayectoria una vez regrese al mar.
Esto se hará a través de un transmisor que le será colocado en tierra. El mismo ejercicio se hará este mes con tinglares en Panamá y Costa Rica, y el fin será ver si van al mismo lugar a alimentarse y qué tan rápido llegan.
Esta información fue provista ayer por el biólogo del DRNA Carlos Diez, coordinador del Programa de Tortugas Marinas de la agencia. “Los estudios de rastreo de la ruta migratoria de las tortugas se vienen haciendo hace un tiempito”, recapituló Diez.
“En el caso del tinglar, en Culebra y el Corredor Ecológico (del Noreste) se han colocado transmisores, inicialmente para saber cuál era la mejor forma de colocarlos para que duraran más. Se pusieron alrededor de 14 (transmisores) y algunos sí dieron información. Uno de ellos   cruzó el Atlántico cerca de las islas Azores y otro llegó hasta las costas de Nueva Escocia en Canadá, que son los lugares de alimentación”, detalló el científico al  hablar específicamente de un estudio realizado junto a la Universidad de New Hampshire. Estimó que los transmisores en estos dos casos permanecieron en su lugar unos seis meses. Otros se cayeron.
El estudio que dará inicio en los próximos días será un esfuerzo regional  junto a la Corporación Caribeña para la Conservación (CCC). De acuerdo con Diez, esta es una de las organizaciones no gubernamentales que por más tiempo han trabajado con tortugas marinas, y cuya base está en Florida.
El secretario del DRNA, Daniel Galán Kercadó, destacó en un comunicado de prensa que “este estudio nos ayudará a obtener información valiosa para realizar colaboraciones y planes de manejo regionales, en los países donde compartimos este recurso”.
El transmisor colocado esta vez es de mejor calidad que los anteriores, por lo que esperan que la trayectoria pueda ser monitoreada con mayor precisión.
El tinglar es la especie de tortuga más grande del mundo y ha sido declarada especie protegida en peligro de extinción. Durante los meses de marzo a julio anida en playas del noreste de Puerto Rico.
Quienes deseen seguir la trayectoria del tinglar “reclutado” en Puerto Rico este mes podrán hacerlo a partir del 13 de junio a través de las páginas del DRNA (www.drna.gobierno.pr) y la CCC (www.cccturtle.org).

El Programa del Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan formará parte este martes de las audiencias públicas y discusiones que celebra el Puerto Rico Task Force en la Casa Blanca. Específicamente la entidad formará parte del "Fortalecimiento del Servicio Social" que incluye la discusión de temas relacionados con servicios sociales, desarrollo urbano, sustentabilidad y creación de proyectos sociales. Asi lo informó el director ejecutivo del Programa del Estuario, Javier Laureano quien ya se encuentra en Washington.



"Nuestra organización hará constar los retos y oportunidades que presenta el Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan y sus cuerpos de agua y cómo esto afecta el ecosistema de otras zonas de Puerto Rico", aseguró Laureano. Uno de los puntos más importantes a enfatizar es la necesidad de dragar el Caño Martín Peña, suplir de un sistema de infraestructura sanitaria adecuada a las comunidades y minimizar las descargas de contaminantes a playas y cuerpos de agua por fuentes dispersas de contaminación.



A la importante sesión están invitados expertos en el tema ambiental, líderes empresariales y comunitarios, legisladores federales asi como el público interesado en proyectos comunitarios. El Programa del Estuario fue invitado por medio de la Agencia de Protección Ambiental (EPA, por sus siglas en inglés), agencia que auspicia y gerencia la entidad.



La invitación se genera como parte de una visita reciente de la Administardora Regional de EPA, Judith Enck, al Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan. Como parte de la visita, el Programa del Estuario y la Caribbean Environment Protection Division enfatizaron la importancia de visitar las operaciones del Proyecto Enlace del Caño Martín Peña, por lo que la Administradora incluyó en la visita a Casa Blanca a la Directora Ejecutiva de esta entidad cuasi pública. El dragado del Caño es una de las prioridades de restauración del ecosistema urbano del Estuario.



En esta ocasión el Puerto Rico Task Force consta de una audiencia de dos sesiones plenarias y tres mesas de trabajo de discusión.

A un año de la instalación de 42 nódulos de arrecifes de coral artificiales en el fondo de la laguna del Condado, la vida marina en ese ecosistema ha aumentado, tanto en cantidad de individuos como en diversidad de especies.
Peces nuevos o poco comunes, pequeñas praderas de yerbas marinas y colonias de coral creciendo sobre los nódulos son sólo tres ejemplos de cómo la naturaleza puede regenerarse con la ayuda del ser humano, que muchas veces es su peor enemigo.
Jorge Bauzá, científico ambiental del Programa del Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan, ente que coordina la iniciativa de corredores y veredas de arrecifes de coral artificiales, indicó ayer que la meta inicial del proyecto se cumplió: aumentar la vida marina en 90%.
“Lo más importante es el reclutamiento de coral. Tenemos más de 30 colonias en crecimiento, que usan los nódulos como sustrato (base)”, dijo Bauzá al explicar que estos organismos llegan a través de las corrientes marinas como pequeñas larvas y se adhieren al nódulo artificial al notar que se trata de una plataforma estable.

Aún es prematuro saber qué tipo de especies de coral se desarrollarán, pero entre las posibilidades se encuentran el coral de dedos, montaña de mostaza y de cerebro.
En recorrido a nado por la vereda submarina, El Nuevo Día constató la presencia de especies de peces como el cirujano, pargo, colirrubia, salmonete, guanábano moteado y la cachicata, entre otros.
Todos, con sus tonalidades azules, amarillas y verdes, se movían entre los nódulos color marrón. Algunos se alimentaban. Es probable que otros se estuvieran reproduciendo. Era notable la presencia de erizos.
En tanto, Héctor Ruiz, de la compañía HJR Reefscaping, detalló que en un período de un año las especies de peces en el área donde se instalaron los nódulos han aumentado de 10 a 25, según un monitoreo realizado a principios de esta semana. Agregó que en el mismo período, la cantidad de individuos se elevó de 95 a 360.
Pero no siempre fue así, aclaró Bauzá. El experto se refirió a que durante el primer trimestre del proyecto la cantidad de peces se redujo debido a que “acuaristas” los pescaban para venderlos en “pet shops”.
“Se intervino amablemente con estas personas y se les informó que no podían pescar en esta área. Se colocaron rótulos y tuvimos éxito”, comentó Bauzá al recordar que desde 2004 la laguna del Condado fue declarada como un “área de no captura”.
Agregó que la instalación de los 42 nódulos en la laguna, que se extienden por 100 metros, fue parte de la mitigación del daño ambiental que causó en 1994 el encallamiento de la barcaza Morris J. Berman, que derramó más de 1.5 millones de litros de aceite.
Por su parte, el director ejecutivo del Programa, Javier Laureano, sostuvo que otro hecho que ha favorecido el florecimiento de la vida marina en la laguna fue el cierre el año pasado de la estación de bombas Colomer, eliminando así las descargas de aguas usadas.
Los funcionarios del Programa instaron a la ciudadanía a visitar el corredor submarino.
También exhortaron a los universitarios a realizar inventarios aquí sobre la cantidad y tipo de especies presentes, así como de las actividades que se están realizando.

2010-05-12 19:22:35 - Cientos de arboles nativos como la Cobana Negra y Palo de Ramón se sembraron en los municipios de  San Juan, Cataño y Loíza  

Como parte del Proyecto de Restauración de Arboles Nativos en Peligro de Extinción o Amenazados,  voluntarios del  Programa del Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan sembraron más de 400 árboles nativos en los sectores de la Quebrada Chiclana en Caimito, la Ciénaga Las Cucharillas en Cataño y en el Bosque de Piñones en Loíza.

Decenas de voluntarios, estudiantes, vecinos de los mencionados sectores y personas comprometidas con el medioambiente participaron de las siembras de árboles nativos como la Cobana Negra y el Palo de Ramón.

En el Bosque de Piñones se sembraron 40 árboles de Cobana Negra, 50 árboles de Palo de Ramón y 5 árboles de Tártago.   Para estas siembras nos acompañaron empleados del Departamento de Recursos Naturales especialistas en siembra de árboles y plantas.

En la Quebrada Chiclana de Caimito, los voluntarios del Estuario lograron sembrar 40 árboles .  Entre estos, 10 individuos de cobana negra, 5 ceibas, 5 uvas playeras, 5 almácigos, 5 icacos negros y una variedad de maga, guasábara, algarrobo, péndula y   heliondilla.  

Asi mismo, en la Ciénaga Las Cucharillas en Cataño, líderes comunitarios asi como voluntarios en su mayoría estudiantes de escuelas públicas y privadas realizaron la siembra de  61  árboles entre los que se encontraban 40 cobana negra y 11 mangle botón.

La Cobana Negra también conocido como el árbol polisandro, caobanilla o cobana es un árbol endémico de Puerto Rico (en el noroeste y suroeste) y la Española (este de Republicana Dominicana).  El rodal más grande en la Isla se encuentra en Cabo Rojo y consta de unos 55 individuos.  Otro rodal considerable de unos 50 individuos, se encuentra en Vieques.

Desde el 5 de abril de 1990 este árbol se encuentra protegido por el Servicio de Pesca y Vida Silvestre federal mediante la Ley de Especies en Peligro de Extinción, bajo la categoría de especie amenazada o vulnerable.   Actualmente, existen varios proyectos para la propagación de sus semillas.

Por otro lado, el Banara Vanderbilti mejor conocido como Palo de Ramón es un árbol siempre verde que puede medir hasta 30 pies de altura y 5 pulgadas de diámetro en el tronco, cuando son jóvenes.

El Programa del Estuario continúa con su programa de siembras en diferentes sectores del estuario asi como el proyecto de monitoreo de calidad de agua, limpieza costera,  prevención de contaminación por las alcantarillas pluviales, rehabilitación de humedales y la restauración de manglares.

2010-05-12 19:04:49 - Más de 700 voluntarios, entre ellos estudiantes de escuelas públicas y privadas, participaron de la  celebración del Día de Monitoreo de Calidad de Agua.
Ese día, el Programa del Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan y la Junta de Calidad Ambiental se unieron para organizar la actividad de monitoreo de calidad de agua en  unos  55  cuerpos de agua alrededor de toda la Isla.  Esto incluye ríos, quebradas, lagunas, canales y playas de unos 30 municipios. La Agencia federal de Protección Ambiental (EPA),  CH Caribe y la Puerto Rico Water & Environment Association  apoyaron este evento.

2010-04-20 12:53:44 - El 24 de abril se celebra el Dia de Monitoreo de Calidad de Agua de Puerto Rico.  Voluntarios del programa del estuario estaran haciendo monitoreo en 55 puntos de la isla.  

El motivo del Día de Monitoreo de Calidad de Agua es dar a conocer y promover la importancia de monitorear los cuerpos de agua que nos rodean como un método de involucrar un mayor número de personas en la conservación de los recursos hídricos de Puerto Rico.   Con esta actividad se espera que cada año un mayor número de personas y entidades  se unan y  apoyen los procesos de monitoreo de los cuerpos de agua en la Isla.

                         The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

con las actuaciones de Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenheaal y Emmy Rossum, presenta una película de ciencia ficción que se basa en lo que podría pasar si debido al calentamiento global se provoca un cambio abrupto y catastrófico en el clima del planeta.  

Después de una serie de eventos climatológicos alrededor de la Tierra,  Jack (Dennis Quaid) previene a la Casa Blanca del inminente cambio climático, su hijo de 17 años, Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal) y tres amigos más incluyendo su interés romántico Laura (Emmy Rossum), se encuentran atrapados en la ciudad de Nueva York. Unos días más tarde, el agua de un tsunami que azotó a Nueva York se congela y todo queda tapado por una gran capa de hielo. Los habitantes emigran a México. Éste acepta la entrada a condición de que se le perdone la deuda externa que tienen con el país americano, Jack se dirige a la ciudad de Nueva York para salvar a Sam. Pero ni siquiera Jack está preparado para lo que está a punto de pasarle a él, a su hijo y a su planeta.

2009-10-09 15:24:35 - El esfuerzo por reforestar el área costera en el area de Cataño se vió afectada por vandalismo.   Personas desconocidas han destruido y talado con machetes sobre 400 árboles de mangle rojo (Rizophora mangle), icacos, almendros y una cantidad significativa de especies costeras sembradas por la entidad y que protegen los bordes de la Bahía de San Juan de un problema severo de erosión que sufre esta parte del Estuario.

Esta situación había sucedido en el pasado en menor escala, pero en esta ocasión se denunció a las autoridades pues el impacto fue muy grande.

Como parte de las acciones, se destruyó un rótulo educativo del Programa del Estuario sobre los beneficios del Mangle rojo localizado en Bayview y se arrancaron 104 plántulas de la especie en un proyecto piloto de importancia medular para la zona.  Todos los árboles arrancados y talados fueron sembrados luego de una inversión de cientos de horas de sobre trecientos voluntarios, niños y estudiantes en un período de dos años.  Algunos de los árboles fueron transportados en balsas por los voluntarios porque no había acceso por tierra a los lugares de siembra.

Los empleados y voluntarios de la organización dejaron saber que no se darán por vencidos y continuarán sembrando en el área de Bayview, de forma que se haga más difícil a los vándalos acabar con los proyectos de restauración y siembra del Programa del Estuario en el área.  Como parte de las estrategias, se contactará nuevamente a los vecinos y líderes comunitarios para comunicar la importancia de este tipo de iniciativas y el gran daño que causan al futuro de su comunidad con estas acciones.  Se trata de una zona donde las casas se podrían ver bajo el agua en las próximas décadas por los eventos de aumento del nivel del mar y erosión costera que se está observando en este eje del Estuario.

Estaremos notificando a nuestros voluntarios sobre futuros eventos de restauración en esta area.

2009-10-09 15:17:37 - El Programa del Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan se unió a la celebración del Día Nacional de Estuarios de Estados Unidos.   El Congreso de Estados Unidos declaró el 26 de septiembre el Día Nacional de los Estuarios como una forma de resaltar la importancia de estos ecosistemas costeros.  Uno de los autores de la medida es el Comisionado Residente de Puerto Rico en Washington,  licenciado Pedro Pierluisi, quien compartió junto al Lcdo. Ramón Lloveras y Pedro Gelabert, miembros de la Junta de Directores  del Estuario y Javier Laureano, Director Ejecutivo del Programa del Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan durante un recorrido a través de las aguas del Estuario.

Este día se efectuó un maratón de viajes cortos saliendo desde la Cooperativa los Laguneros de Cantera en San Juan. A este recorrido asistieron jóvenes participantes de los proyectos del estuario y público en general.

En la noche, el Estuario continuó celebrando el Día Nacional de los Estuarios con  la serie de filmes al aire libre Cine Verde del Estuario en el Parque Jaime Benítez de la Laguna del Condado.   Se presentó el cortometraje "The National Parks: America's Best Idea"  una serie dirigida por Ken Burns y escrito y co-producido por Dayton Duncan.  

Luego se presentó película  Winged Migration (Le Peuple Migrateur) (2001).  Un documental francés de los directores Jacques Cluzaud, Michel Debat y Jacques Perrin.  El filme se niega a seguir el enfoque antropocéntrico de la mayor parte de los documentales ecológicos e intenta seguir la perspectiva de las aves migratorias en su aventura de viajar por el planeta.  

Sobre 180 personas disfrutaron de una noche de película al aire libre junto al personal del Estuario.

2009-10-09 14:45:50 - El Programa del Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan se unión a la celebración del 40 aniversario  del Festival de Música y Arte de  Woodstock que se llevo a cabo en el estado de Nueva York para los años setenta.    

Cine Verde del Estuario, en unión al Festival Internacional de Cine de San Juan, presentaró  el documental Woodstock dirigido por el director Michael Wadleigh y editado por el también director de cine Martin Scorsese.

El filme incluye legendarias presentaciones musicales, así como las reacciones de los residentes de la comunidad Bethel en Nueva York donde se celebró el festival musical y testimonios de algunos de los 400 mil jóvenes que asistieron al evento.

Woodstock, ganadora del Oscar al Mejor Documental se proyectó el sábado 3 de octubre  a las 7:00 de la noche  en el Parque Jaime Benítez de la Laguna del Condado.  La entrada fue libre de costo y sobre 100 personas disfrutaron de este evento.

         Cine Verde también proyecta  documentales y anuncios para promover el ecosistema del Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan y se realiza todos los segundos y cuartos sábados del mes.

2009-08-11 14:30:55 - El  31 de julio de 2009 el Gobernador de Puerto Rico, Hon. Luis Fortuño, firmó el Proyecto de Ley 779 corvientiéndolo en Ley.  Esta ley establece unos medios para crear un Fondo Especial del Estuario con diferentes opciones para que los ciudadanos puedan cooperar con el Programa del Estuario voluntariamente.  En comunicaciones futuras les iremos informando de estas iniciativas.

2009-08-11 11:58:31 - La Coalición Amigos de la Arena es una iniciativa que reúne de forma voluntaria al capítulo de Puerto Rico de Keep America Beautiful (“Conservo el Encanto de Mi Isla Preciosa”); Scuba Dogs Society; OPAS y el Programa del Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan.  Uno de los primeros objetivos de la Coalición es minimizar y prevenir la basura relacionada al hábito de fumar de la playa.  Con este motivo, estamos efectuando una encuesta a la cual le invitamos a participar.

2009-07-30 18:53:05 - El 8 de abril de 2009 nuestro Programa inauguró un nuevo proyecto de restauración de la vida submarina.  En esta actividad se inauguró una vereda de arrecifes artificiales en la pocita de la playa del Escambron en San Juan  detrás del Hotel Normandie.  Durante el evento se coocaron las últimas estructuras de arrecifes artificiales para un total de 200 estructuras.  Este proyecto de restauración fue posible gracias al auspicio de la compañía Global Caribbean Network y la fundación Morris J. Berman.

El proyecto de restauración de veredas de arrecifes de coral comenzó en la Laguna del Condado en noviembre del 2008 con la colocación de 45 estructuras y desde entonces la vida marina aumentó en un 90% en esa area.

Gracias a nuestros auspiciadores, voluntarios y colaboradores del Programa dijeron presente en la actividad.

2009-07-30 18:47:51 - El día 24 de abril de 2009 el honorable Gobernador de Puerto Rico, Luis Fortuño, firmó la proclama del Día de Monitoreo de Calidad de Agua de Puerto Rico.
Con esta actividad, Puerto Rico se une oficialmente al World Water Quality Monitoring Day.
  
La actividad se llevó a cabo en las instalaciones del Parque de la Laguna del Condado Jaime Benítez y contó con la participación de voluntarios de nuestro programa y con agencias gubernamentales.
  
El motivo del Primer Día de Monitoreo de Calidad de Agua es dar a conocer y promover la importancia de monitorear los cuerpos de agua que nos rodean como un método de involucrar un mayor número de personas en la conservación de los recursos hídricos de Puerto Rico.  
  
Con esta actividad se espera que cada año un mayor número de personas y entidades  se unan y  apoyen los procesos de monitoreo de los cuerpos de agua de Puerto Rico.  Se preparará y dará a conocer un informe anual que se enviará a su vez al banco de datos mundial del World Water Quality Monitoring Day.  
  
En el 2008, 73,000 personas en 70 países llevaron a cabo actividades de monitoreo
de calidad de agua en conmemoración del Día Mundial de Monitoreo de Calidad de
Agua y a partir de este año Puerto Rico se une al movimiento internacional.

2009-07-30 18:27:21 - El sábado 18 de julio de 2009 un grupo de voluntarios de nuestro Programa disfrutó de un recorrido educativo a través de la Ciénaga Las Cucharillas en Cataño.  Esta actividad se coordinó con la organización Corredor del Yagüazo y les dió la oportunidad a los participantes de conocer este ecosistema.

2009-07-30 15:18:53 - Durante la primera semana de Junio el canal televisivo WAPA TV ofreció una serie de reportajes sobre el Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan.  En el mismo se presentaron imágenes de los diferentes cuerpos de agua que componen el estuario y se educó a la teleaudiencia en la importancia de este ecosistema.

2009-07-30 15:04:02 - Nuestros "Vigilantes del Estuario" tuvieron la oportunidad de compartir los hallazgos de los monitoreos agua del programa con Carl Soderber, Director de la División del Caribe de la EPA.

"Vigilantes del Estuario" es un programa de monitoreo de agua, desarrollado por el Programa del Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan (PEBSJ) en conjunto con Crowley Puerto Rico Services Inc.   Los estudiantes presentaron un resumen de los datos encontrados en el cuerpo de agua de la Laguna de Piñones, al igual que compartieron sus experiencias en el campo.

Felicitamos a los participantes de este programa y los exhortamos a continuar con el compromiso de monitorear los cuerpos de agua del Estuario.

2009-07-30 14:54:47 - El  Programa del Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan estrenó en el mes de junio  la película “Las Estrellas del Estuario” con el objetivo de dar a conocer las bellezas naturales que nos rodean en el Estuario y en plena zona metropolitana.  Esta película cuenta la historia de cuatro niños que comienzan una aventura que los lleva de la Laguna del Condado, a la Bahía de San Juan, a la Ciénaga las Cucharillas en Cataño, luego al caño Martín Peña, a la Laguna San José y finalmente a la Laguna de Piñones.  
  
Las Estrellas del Estuario se presentará todos los domingos  de junio y julio en la Filmoteca de Puerto Rico (antiguo cine del Cuartel Ballajá) en el Viejo San Juan con  funciones a la 1:30 pm, 3:00 y 4:30 p.m.
  
“Este filme invita al público infantil a disfrutar de los lugares fantásticos que nos rodean, a la vez que entretiene a la familia con un mensaje de diversión y aprendizaje sobre la naturaleza”, destacó Javier Laureano, nuestro Director Ejecutivo de el Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan.
  
La película fue producida por Isla Films con un guión escrito por José Ignacio Valenzuela, y el argumento de los niños Franchesca Carroll y Salvador Casellas, dirigida por Sonia Fritz y la producción de Frances Lausell.  Los cuatro niños actores son Ian Robles, Valería López, Andrés Torres y Havanna Cabrero junto a los reconocidos actores del patio Iliana García, Oscar Guerrero, Ernesto Concepción y Lucienne Hernández, quienes interpretan a una ambientalista, un capitán y los papás de dos de los niños respectivamente.   La película se grabó en alta definición (HD) durante ocho días y cuenta con la fotografía de Willie Berríos, la edición de Lou Alers, el diseño de producción de Mailara Santana, y la animación del grupo “Llamarada de Petate”.  
  
Para prepararse para la filmación, los niños recibieron la orientación del biólogo ambiental del Estuario, doctor Jorge Bauzá, y la niña científica, Valeria López, hizo el recorrido en bote previo a la filmación, para conocer las especies que habitan la Laguna San José hasta llegar a Piñones.  Esta producción contó con el apoyo de Parques Nacionales, además de diversas organizaciones que trabajan en pro del ambiente, tales como El Corredor del Yagüazo, COPI en Piñones y G Works entre otros.  En la post-producción debo destacar el trabajo del Coro de Niños de San Juan que se sumaron a este esfuerzo al interpretar  las
canciones que dan vida a la animación.  A todos los auspiciadores les agradeceremos el apoyo porque es sólo mediante la  conjunción de esfuerzos de mucha gente y empresas que podemos producir nuestro propio cine”.
  
Las Estrellas del Estuario es el primer largometraje infantil de tema ecológico que integra animación realizado en Puerto Rico.   Precisamente, el filme se presentó en el  Festival Latino de Chicago el pasado mes de abril con la presencia de los niños actores y  recientemente fue aceptado por DIVERCINE 2009, un festival infantil de América Latina.  Este es el primer  largometraje puertorriqueño que acepta  DIVERCINE el cual culmina en Puerto Rico con un evento que se celebrará los días 18 y 19 de junio en el Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, con entrada gratis al público en general.

2009-07-30 14:39:23 - Sobre 90 voluntarios del Programa del Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan se dieron cita el sábado, 11 de julio para recoger basura y plantar árboles de Uva Playera en el Islote la Esperanza y en las orillas de la Bahía en Cataño.  Se recogieron un estimado de 1,800 libras de basura y plantaron 50 árboles para estabilizar las dunas y mejorar el hábitat de las especies que visitan el área.

El islote La Esperanza es parte del Estuario y sirve de anidaje y hábitat a decenas de especies como el pelicano pardo, gaviotas, cangrejos, violinistas, almejas y distintos tipos de árboles y arbustos, como emajaguillas, mangles y otros.
“Por ser hogar de especies en peligro de extinción, el Programa del Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan no promueve el uso recreativo o masivo del islote, por lo que la actividad de hoy fue una oportunidad única para los voluntarios para conocer y ayudar a conservar esta joya natural”, expresó nuestro Director, Javier Laureano.

Laureano también destacó que el proyecto tiene el propósito de identificar el tipo de basura que llega a distintas áreas del Estuario de forma que se puedan tomar medidas de control para evitar que siga ocurriendo.

2008-11-01 07:08:01 - Gracias a la colaboración y trabajo de estudiantes de Saint Johns School y de la Academia Sagrado Corazón de Santurce, el Programa del Estuario en colaboración con el Municipio de San Juan colocó la chapa educativa del Estuario en todas las pluviales del Viejo San Juan.  En una segunda fase, el Dr. Bauzá y Laureano estarán tomando las localizaciones de todas las pluviales en GPS.

2008-11-01 07:03:48 - Bajo el lema "A la alcantarilla sólo agua de lluvia" el Programa del Estuario lanzó su campaña educativa para mantener los pluviales limpios.  La actividad se llevó a cabo en el Banco Popular del Viejo San Juan y contó con la participación del alcalde Jorge Santinti, el Presidente de la Junta, Ramón Lloveras y el Director Regional de la EPA, Carl Soderberg.  

La campaña cuenta con tres ejecuciones de prensa y una de televisión.  Todas están dirigida a llevar el mensaje de la importancia de no depositar aceites, basura y contaminantes en el sistema de alcantarillado pluvial.

2008-04-08 11:18:20 - El Programa del Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan realizó la primera de una serie de siembras en el Parque Dones; lugar en la ciudad que dentro de unos meses se convertirá en el parque ecoturístico del Estuario.  Con la ayuda de más de cien voluntarios, pudimos sembrar 200 arbolitos y recoger basura en
la costa. Las empresas Wal-Mart, Garnier y Sam's formaron parte de esta iniciativa y empleados de las compañías tuvieron la oportunidad de participar de la siembra. Además de esto, el Municipio de San Juan colaboró con el Estuario para poder hacer de esta actividad un éxito. Esta es la primera de muchas actividades que se realizarán en el Parque Ecoturístico del Estuario.

2008-04-08 11:09:35 - El Programa del Estuario de la
Bahía de San Juan ganó el premio "Environmental Quality Award 2008" de
la Agencia de Protección Ambiental. EL reconocimiento se le otorga a
entidades que trabajen o realicen proyectos para mejorar la calidad
ambiental. En nuestro caso, se premia nuestro Programa de Siembra en el
Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan. Compartimos esta victoria con tod@s l@s
voluntarios que nos ha ayudado a sembrar por tantos años y agradecemos el
compromiso que siempre tienen para restaurar el Estuario. La premiación se realizará en la ciudad de Nueva York.

2008-02-27 15:30:10 - El sábado 23 de febrero alrededor de 100 voluntarios se dieron cita al humedal en las Ciénaga las Cucharillas para sembrar. Prestos a restaurar el área, vecinos, maestros y estudiantes y ciudadanos se dieron cita a las siembra realizada por varias organizaciones ambientales. Más de 40 árboles de pterocarpus fueron sembrados estrátegicamente a través del humedal. Con el agua hasta las rodillas, buen humor y compromiso, los asistentes lograron apoyar el sueño de los vecinos de Juana Matos de convertir el humedal en un laboratorio para el aprendizaje y la conservación de la naturaleza.

2007-10-27 23:23:08 - El Consorcio del Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan comenzó la segunda fase de limpieza de desechos marinos, siembra de árboles y remoción de redes e hilos de pescar en los bordes de la Bahía y los cuerpos de agua del Estuario.  En las actividades realizadas se encuentra la siembra de mangles de botón y árboles maría en la parte Oeste del Estuario, específicamente en el borde localizado antes de llegar a Isla de Cabras. La basura marina ocasiona la muerte de cientos de peces, tortugas y animales marinos que se enredan continuamente en estos desechos.

Además, los grupos de voluntarios del Consorcio del Estuario también limpiaron las alcantarillas pluviales de las comunidades que viven en los bordes de la Quebrada San Antón, que desemboca en la Laguna San José.  Las alcantarillas pluviales son fuentes desde la que llega un alto volumen de basura a los cuerpos de agua del Estuario.

Las actividades concurrentes se realizaron con voluntarios de Popular Insurance y Popular, Inc., además del cuerpo de voluntarios del Consorcio del Estuario.  "Gracias a nuestros voluntarios hacemos conscientes cada día a más ciudadanos que el Área Metro es una ciudad desarrollada en medio de canales de agua, donde viven cientos de especies, estos cuerpos de agua son nuestros y nos toca a todos protegerlos y trabajar en su restauración", expresó Javier E. Laureano, Director Ejecutivo de la entidad.

2007-06-16 23:13:49 - Agradecemos a todas las entidades y voluntarios que se unieron a la primera actividad de restauración del Islote la Esperanza en el eje oeste de Cataño.  El Islote se creó producto del material de dragado de los canales de navegación de la Bahía de SJ y hoy es hábitat de decenas de especies, incluyendo el pelícano pardo y los cangrejos violinistas.

Entre las entidades que colaboraron con nosotros se encuentra el Corredor del Yaguazo, CUCCO, la EPA, el DRNA, el Coast Guard y el Coast Guard Auxiliary, Sierra Club, Clubes 4H, G Works, el Municipio de Cataño, los amigos de Encanto Ecotorus, que proveyeron balsas para ir y regresar al Islote, aparte de transportar las bolsas de basura, estudiantes de la UPR y de la Poli, Coastal and Marine, además de empresas privadas como Bacardí Corporation.
